"Garbage" Senate Committees

Senators Rodolfo Biazon and Alfredo Lim figured in a ruckus during a plenary session on Monday over chairmanships in the committees.

Taking the rostrum, Biazon denounced Lim, a senator for the minority bloc, for using the word “swapang” (greedy) to describe the decision of the 14-member majority group to divide among themselves 28 of the 36 standing committees.

Lim uttered the word while interpellating Senator Juan Ponce Enrile who castigated his colleagues in the majority bloc for leaving those in the minority with what he described as “garbage” committees.

The remaining vacant committees are:

1. cooperatives
2. communities
3. civil service and government reorganization;
4. peace, unification and reconciliation
5. public information and mass media
6. social justice and rural development
7. urban planning and resettlement
8. youth, women, and family relations

Well, now we know which committees our senators think are garbage....

"Garbage committees?" What kind of people are we voting into the senate? If they think that these committees are all worthless, they all need to go back to high school and take social science classes.

There is actually already a prominent "architect" politician. Manila's mayor Lito Atienza studied architecture at the University of Santo Tomas. I'm not sure though if he ever got his license.
He has done a lot of progressive things for Manila like the Manila Bay Boardwalk, pedestrianization of Rizal Avenue and rehabilitation of the Lacson underpass.
He's also done controversial things like tearing down the historic Welton Beckett designed Jai-Alai building which was supposed to pave the way for a new Manila's Hall of Justice that never materialized.
He's also at odds with environmentalist for wanting to build structures on the 2-hectare forest which is Arroceros Park.
Atienza, for all his architectural training can still be seen as either a city savior or a historian's and environmentalist's worst nightmare.

Peeps,

Lito Atienza took Architecture in UST. He just never finished it. He dropped out or got kicked out (I don't know the story) midway through his pursuit of the degree....

arki grad or not, i still think atienza's urban renewal strategies should be re-evaluated. where are his city planners??? tinabunan na nga ng konkreto yun mehan gardens, pati ba naman arroceros park??? grrr... he should focus his energies on cleaning up the pasig river and the revitalizing the riverbank area. (mac, mag-post ka nga ng background material on singapore river revitalization. we need some start-up info here.)
